The Bridge of
Spies
Perform!

"Introducing Harrison Street Elementary. Appraisers, are you ready?
"Yes. You bet!."
"Team,
are you ready?"
"You
bet!"
"Begin!"
The
team shuffled their props onto the set--where did the water go again? Natalie's hem was caught in a wave (we didn't
anticipate that!). The castle was
sitting too far back...Natalie wrestled free, but...yes! Kalli directed her
to the correct side of the stage.
Jessica remembered to start her lines as the boys pointed to John to
place the first...oh no! The largest
weight is twice what we thought, and CRASH!
The bridge is done, moments into the performance. What will they do? I sigh in relief when the next line is
spoken, proud and surprised by their presence of mind. I watch intensely...
"Ahoy, matey! I'll take your gold, AURGH! Hop aboard!" Hannah and Kalli
move across the stage water in their boat.
The play proceeds, each line spoken to the audience, not missing a beat.
"How about ice-cream instead of gold?"
"Sounds
good to me, but I still want my gold!"
The
three girls slide through the castle door, the boys propping it back up as it
falls forward. Back to the boat, the
waves are rough as the three girls swish the boat to the beat of Hannah's sound
effects.
"I
raise my ice-cream torch of freedom..."
Natalie, the Statue of Liberty, remembers to recite her poem loudly to
the audience and the team takes a bow just in "TIME"! The score sheet won't show the success
of this team, but memories are stronger than numbers…and these memories are of
a team of first place second grade stars.
